Bail Agent Job Description

Being a bail agent is more about who you know, than what you know. Don't take that wrong, because you have to know a lot of stuff! But you've got to know a lot of people to be successful. For starters, it helps to know the Sheriff and his deputies along with the Police Chief and the police officers. You also need to know the District Attorney and the assistant DA's along with the Judges and even the public defenders. But you also need to know the Court Clerks, the court administrators and the court bailiffs. And let's not forget the criminal defense attorneys along with their paralegals, clerks and assistants. And of course, it's very important that you know people who actually get in trouble and their families. As you can guess, that's the reason, it's very important that you "be from round here" in order to be successful at writing bail bonds in any given place.

As far as being a bail agent goes, you'll have to attend a 40 hour class that will teach the laws and regulations of being a bail agent, but it won't teach you how to be a bail agent. That takes a lot more than 40 hours and we'll teach you that. Here is some of what you can expect. Please realize that the following list includes typical responsibilities and there is always more.

Underwriting

Use independent judgment to evaluate the interrelated considerations of flight risk and financial credit worthiness and overall dependability of the indemnitors and defendants in determining whether Mississippi Bonding Company should underwrite the risk of a criminal defendant's non-appearance in court – the bottom line – will the defendant show up for court. That means:

Customer Service

Mississippi Bonding has been in the bail bonding business since 1967. We have been here that long because we offer the best customer service and we treat everyone we deal with the way we want to be treated – with honesty and respect. We demand the same out of every agent that writes for us.

Experience Required

The bail bonding business is a twenty-four hour customer service business. If you can't answer the phone when customers call – they won't call back. If you can't go when they need you – they won't call back and even more importantly – when a defendant calls you and you don't show up – the next time a defendant goes to call you the jailer will tell him – don't call that guy – he won't come. You have to be willing to go to the jail in the middle of the night and get up the next morning and be in court, always with a smile. If this sounds like something you're interested, please apply. By any definition, this is a sales job and if you don't think you would be good at being a salesperson – don't waste your time.
